Victorian Principles of Literature
Major Ideas:
  • Reality and scenes of the hardships of contemporary times. The supernatural was shunned in favor of real life struggles and values of hard work and altruism.
  • Moral behavior and ideals were emphasized.
  • Sought to improve society.
  • Criticized seemingly less than savory elements of society.
  • Served as a transition between the Romantic and Modernist eras of poetry.
